about this site

What's on here?

My generally rather rough notes about historical topics. Blog posts are usually associated with a particular source which I am reading, and which I will quote from in my notes. It's experimental, and actually I'm creating it for my own requirements. The posts are dated but there isn't necessarily any need to read them in order.

Conventions

  • Paragraphs not indented are in editorial voice, summarising parts of the work not directly quoted, explanations, etc.
  • Where I have a personal observation or alternative view, or an axe to grind with the author, I use (FP note)
  • I usually put the full reference to each source at the end of the page.
  • I might use abbreviations for some sources, also explained at bottom of page.

How do I find it?

By historical period - date - or by topic. Many topics are connected with an individual or a group of people with significant influence, whether academic, cultural or political.

Ancient history

I'm especially interested in the development of the 'known world' views throughout history, and how. The first few posts on here covered some topics about knowledge in ancient history. However, right now I have a need to focus on a different period. For the time being (Nov 2024) I will mostly be writing notes in connection with Diamond Pitt about the 17th and early 18th centuries.
